How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
