FAQ

Do I need special equipment to grow vegetables in my garden?

Non, really. You only need a trowel, shovel, watering can, and a rake.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. Aquaponics is like having your own farm in your home.

What vegetables are good to grow together and what are the best?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. Plant them together indoors at least six weeks before you plant them. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

What is the first thing to do when starting a garden?

Preparing the soil is the most important step in starting a garden. This includes adding organic material such as composted horse manure, grass clippings or leaves, straw and the like, which provides plant nutrients. Next, you will plant your seeds or seedlings directly into the prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

Which kind of lighting is most effective for growing indoor plants?

Because they emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs, Florescent lights are ideal for indoor plant growth. They provide steady lighting without dimming or flickering. Both regular and compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs are available. CFLs can use up to 75% more energy than traditional bulbs.

How long can an indoor plant be kept alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. However, it's important to repot your plant every few months to help promote new growth. Repotting is easy; simply remove the old soil and add fresh compost.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
