How to grow basil

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds must be planted at the latest two weeks before last frost. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination can take up to ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Fill each container with potting mix and add some gravel or pebbles to help drain excess moisture. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
