Planting dahlias

The best time to plant dahlias in the garden is during the spring, after the risk of frosts has passed. Dahlias grow best in a well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. You can also add soil conditioner and mushroom compost to your soil. In dry climates, water the dahlias two times a week. Dahlias have large, open blooms which can easily become brittle and need to be watered frequently. Dahlias can begin to bloom as soon as eight weeks after being planted.

Dahlias may survive all types of winters. They might not survive extreme weather. In the event of a hard frost, dahlia tubers should be removed and stored in a cool, frost-free area.

Dahlias can perform well in the garden and are popular with both flower farmers and gardeners. They have a great deal of blooms and are extremely productive. They not only provide a wide range of flowers during the growing season but also allow you to enjoy an additional few weeks.

Dahlias make a wonderful addition in the spring garden. They are a hardy, shallow-rooted shrub that does well with mulching in early spring. Mulch helps dahlias keep from drying out. For soil moisture, garden compost can be used or well-rotted horse manure. Dahlias also respond best to liquid fertilisers with a high-potash content.

Pruning of clematis

Pruning clematis can give you a headstart on spring by pruning them in February. To get the best results, you should start by working your stems down. This allows you to trim your clematis' stems after they have flowered to make them more productive in the summer.

There are two options for pruning clematis. Hard pruning is done at least 15cm aboveground. You can either prune the crown or base depending on which species you are using. Ideal is to prune the plant within one meter.

Clematis are divided according to the time they bloom. It is best to not prune clematis in early flowering stages as it will result in the death of all buds. Following the first flushes of flowers in June, Group 2 clematis needs to be pruned twice by September.

Depending on the type of clematis you have, you may need to prune them in February if they're not ready to bloom. For those that bloom in June or July you can begin to prune their stems in January. Pinching the flower heads of old plants can help to prune their stalks. This can encourage the plant's blooming.

Mulching beds

Mulching is a great tool to help maintain your garden and reduce weed growth. Mulching improves soil structure and conserves water. Mulching isn't an easy job for all gardeners and homeowners sometimes have difficulty maintaining mulched gardens. Compost or a fine mulch of leaves and grasses is the best mulch to use for perennials. You can also use wood chips, or processed conifer Bark.

This rotted grass will slowly incorporate organic matter into the soil, and earthworms will start working their way into the ground. In addition, you can apply heavy mulch around the base of your plants. This is especially important for grafted trees.

Mulching your garden beds in February can also prevent soil from freezing. This will protect your plants against damaging frost. The ground temperature can change dramatically in winter so it is important that it remains constant.

Protecting plants

It is crucial that gardeners take measures to protect their plants from pests, especially during February and March. First, check that the garden is free and clear of invasive species and weeds. Apply glyphosate, or a fungicide, to any emerging weeds.

If you have trees, you can use clopyralid to control pests. This herbicide can also help protect your roses’ leaves. This will keep your plants safe from mice, rats, and other pests. Cool, moist areas are attractive to snails, so make sure you cover them. Planting annual flowers and bare-root vegetables in your garden is possible during winter. You can also cut down ornamental grass stalks to make room for new growth.

February is a good time to plant cool-season vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, leeks, lettuce, spinach, onions and more. You can also plant some perennials, such as garlic chive greens and kale. In milder climates, you can also plant ramps and wild garlic.

Before planting, you should clean up the garden and greenhouse. To check if the bulbs, corms, and tubers are dry or rotten, you should also inspect them. It is also a good idea to start seeds for annual and cool-season flowers.

Repotting indoor plants

Repotting indoor plants should be done at least once per calendar year. It involves carefully removing indoor plants' roots from their current containers and replanting them in fresh soil. Repotting is important for plants that have grown beyond their current containers and require a larger container.

Most houseplants grow out of their pots and need a bigger container. The roots can spread out and absorb more nutrients if the pot is larger. However, repotting too soon may harm a plant in a slow growth stage or dormant state.

Before you repot your indoor plants, make sure the soil is appropriate for the plant. Use nutrient enriched potting soil. Avoid using cheap potting soil, which will result in rotting of the roots. To protect hardwood floors and carpeting, you should place saucers beneath the pots. A premium potting soil mixture should contain fertilizer. Espoma Organics' potting soil mix is perfect for indoor plants of all kinds.

When the weather shifts from winter to summer, it's time to repot your indoor plants. Spring brings more sunlight and warmer temperatures. This allows plants adapt to the changing seasons.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
