Why leave leaves on the ground?

tips for gardening at home

It can be frustrating to have to manage piles of leaves. Sometimes, you may need to drag a few inches of leaves around and wonder why. The first thing to remember is that you should remove leaves at minimum one to three times per year. It's best to do this a few days before the snow starts to fall. Leaf piles provide a breeding ground to a variety pests including snakes which can bite people.

Although it may seem appealing to haul away leaves, these are an unnecessary cost and contribute to climate changes. Furthermore, raking leaves and then transferring them into bags is inconvenient. It also reduces nutrients to your garden and damages wildlife habitat. Fortunately, there's another option: letting fallen leaves decompose naturally. Not only is it cheaper, but the environment will be better if leaves are allowed to decompose.

Decomposing leaves can provide food and shelter for birds and other insects. They also retain more water. These organic materials also serve as natural mulch, returning valuable nutrients back to the soil. The problem with raking leaf matter is that it can often overshadow one section of your yard. Some plants, such as those that are part of the important insect-friendly species, can benefit from the process of decomposition. It's good for the environment and beneficial for your health.

Before the first snowfall is the best time of year to remove leaves. Leaves can add beauty to your home and lawn. It is important to trim leaves with care. A good clipper can be used for this job. To chop up leaves, you can use a leaf blower and a rake in addition to raking. These tools will help you get rid of leaves and turn them into mulch for your lawn.

Proper footwear and protective gear are important to avoid injury. A sturdy tarp can help you keep your body from slipping. Avoid bending at waist level when raking leaves. You could inflict serious injury. Use sunscreen as lower temperatures do not necessarily mean higher sun rays. You should take frequent breaks and use an elevated ladder. A sturdy ladder is recommended for reaching high places.

The leaves are good for your lawn. Falling leaves will enrich the soil, reduce erosion, and feed your lawn. You won't need to add any fertilizer to your lawn once the leaves decompose. Additionally, the fallen leaves will cover sensitive root systems, preserve soil moisture, and suppress weeds. It's a good idea to remove leaves during autumn. If you can't prevent fallen leaves from ruining your yard's landscape, it's best not to do so.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one among the most versatile herbs you could use in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavouring dishes, as well as adding flavor to soups and sauces, pasta, and desserts. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination can take up to ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seeds are big enough, it's time to transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. As necessary, you can add more potting material. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
