FAQ

What month is best for starting a vegetable or fruit garden?

It is best to plant vegetables between April and June. This is when the soil gets warmest, and plants tend to grow quickly. If you live in colder climates, you might wait until July or Aug.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.

What is a planting plan?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. A second option is soil testing. These tests assess the soil's nutritional content.

How do I prepare the soil for a garden?

Preparing soil for a vegetable garden is easy. First, get rid of all weeds. You can then add organic matter, such as composted cow manure, leaves and grass clippings. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

What should I do the first time you want to start a vegetable garden?

The first step to starting a garden is to prepare it. This includes adding organic matter such as composted manure, grass clippings, leaves, straw, etc., which helps provide plant nutrients. Next, plant seeds or seedlings into prepared holes. Water thoroughly.

Which kind of lighting is most effective for growing indoor plants?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They also provide consistent lighting without flickering or dimming. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
