Fluorescent bulbs come in both compact fluorescent (CFL) and regular varieties. CFLs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
