FAQ

Which type of lighting is best for indoor plants?

Because they emit less heat then incandescent lamps, floralescent lights can be used indoors to grow plants. They provide constant lighting that doesn't flicker or dimm. There are two types of fluorescent bulbs: regular and compact fluorescent (CFL). CFLs consume up to 75% less electricity than traditional bulbs.

How often should I water indoor plants?

Indoor plants need watering every two days. The humidity inside your house can be maintained by watering. Healthy plants require humidity.

When to plant herbs

Herbs should be planted during springtime when soil temperatures reach 55degF. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. When plants are growing, place them in bright indirect lighting. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

When to plant flowers

Planting flowers in spring is easier when the temperature is lower and the soil remains moist. If you live somewhere cold, planting flowers should be done before the first frost. The ideal temperature for growing plants indoors is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is there enough space in my backyard to grow a vegetable garden.

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. Yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. You could also use containers to replace raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
